A great morning walk through the forest with a great diversity of species. Great views of a female Spotted Quail-thrush along West End Track casually walking in front and around for a while giving great views. Also a Cicadabird and Turquoise Parrot at the end of Stoney Creek Track. This is my most southerly record for Turqs in north-east Victoria, I don't think they would occur much further south. Plenty of White-throated Needletails about as well, some so close they[…]

G'day everyone, The Hillarys pelagic trip of Perth in September 2010 recorded a single 'pale' Wedgie, similar in plumage to Mick's bird, just north of Rottnest Island. We described it as an intermediate morph, but as I say, it was similar in plumage to Mick's bird, with pale underbody and underwings. Unfortunately the bird didn't come into the boat and the only photos I know of are very distant. I didn't take them, but I'll see if I can get[…]

Austral Fisheries has a PR promotional advertisement in the latest Weekend Australian magazine:- "At Austral fisheries our constant focus is on the sustainable catching of fish, not wild birds. Our operational standards are set so high that if an Austral fisheries boat catches a single protected seabird off Macquarie Island, our entire season of fishing has to be abandoned at enormous financial cost to us. We don't fish by longline when seabirds are breeding or feeding their young chicks." etc etc.

Victorian birders are invited to help save native waterbirds when the duck hunting season starts on March 17. Information meetings will be held 29 February, 5 March and 8 March at 7.30pm on the top floor of Kindness House, 288 Brunswick Street, Fitzroy. You may like to help prevent birds being shot on the wetlands or collect the dead and wounded birds which are taken to the mobile veterinary unit on shore. But there are plenty of other jobs. Volunteers[…]

Hi Jeff, Thanks for your comment. I totally agree. I was actually also trying to say that Mick's is a pale/"intermediate" morph bird (especially if you "lump" pale and intermediate), in contrast our cafe-au-lait and white-bellied birds are just weird dark morphs (e.g. "retained extremely worn belly"; and yes, I've seen this in Providence Petrels, too).

Hi All, I have been sorting out my bird book collection and have a number of duplicates that I thought I would offer to the B-A community first of all, rather than ebay. The list of books is below:- How to identify Native Birds of the Grampians, Ken Woodcock, pp 52. (Excellent condition - brand new)

We had a pale morph wedge-tail on the Sydney pelagic of March, 11, 2006, the only one that I have seen in 200+ trips off Sydney. David Stowe got a picture of it which I have in my files but I'm not sure of the copyright situation so haven't included a link. Maybe David could send copies to interested parties?

G'day Nikolas, Mick's bird appears to have a typical pale morph body but with a slightly darker under-wing. However the only image that shows the darker than typical under-wing also shows an almost completely dark hood which we know isn't real from other photos of the bird on the water where it looks like a normal

Sorry, I have not only seen cafe-au-lait coloured ones but also birds that I believe are dark morph but with aberrant pale bellies, such as this one in Raja's collection: [link] So this again makes Mick's, Steve's and Lucas's find so interesting! Cheers,

Hi Mick & Birding-aus, The bird looks certainly interesting! The only "pale" WTSWs I have seen in Australia were overall cafe-au-lait coloured. Mick's bird, however, looks "normal" from above and has clear white areas underneath (belly and underwing - but not extensive enough for a "perfect" pale

An afternoon visit to Long Reef on the off-chance of something interesting was turning up all the usuals - Sooty Oystercatchers, Red-necked Stints, Eastern Golden Plovers - with a few Wedgetails, a Short-tailed and a couple of Flutterings offshore in the very light winds. Then astounded to pick-up a Red-tailed Tropicbird off the reef, gaining height after a dive for fish. After another dive it headed southeast and out to sea.

A fairly quiet day with a lot more water in the lake than the last trip, so fewer crakes visible. A single Latham's Snipe was along the north-western edge of the eastern lake in full view for some time. A single Elegant Parrot (female going on the duller upper parts and subdued nasal band) was drinking at the edge of the eastern lake near the bridge to the viewing platform. One pair of Yellow-tailed Black-cockatoos flew through the picnic site[…]

[ A large, mottled, muddy brown falcon observed flying at high speed along canal a few metres above water, seen briefly from less than 10 metres. Lacked obvious facial marking, underpart colour, or tail barring. A juvenile Peregrine would appear to be the only other falcon of this size, but colour and marking didn't appear to match (in my experience). This is a "heads up" not a 'claimed' record!]

10:35am Travelling south along the Bruce Highway beside the eastern foothills of Mount Elliot, we witnessed an amazing avian phenomenon. For at least 8 kilometres along the Bruce Highway, from about the Cape Cleveland Road intersection past Cromarty Road to about the Emmet Creek bridge many thousands of Fork-tailled Swifts swarmed the skies around us as far as we could see. At times, there was also a small percentage of White-throated Needletails amongst them (3 to 5 individuals). We stopped[…]
